Nujiang in northwest Yunnan borders on Myanmar and Tibet. The sparsely populated prefecture includes a concentration of the Lisu ethnic peoples. The Nu River (怒江, also known as the Salween) forged a rugged canyon through the region. High mountains rise on either side of the river, providing opportunities for the relatively few trekkers who venture to the area.
