Shangri-La Highlands (香格里拉高地) is an area of forests, alpine meadows and mountains located 15 km to the east of Shangri-La City (香格里拉市). It is bordered on the east by Pudacuo National Park (普达措国家公园). Forest roads and paths lead from the valleys up to lofty meadows grazed by yaks. Dirt roads passable by motorcycle and high-clearance vehicles criss-cross the area. The tallest summit reaches 4,500 meters. The steep-sided pyramid of Cheese Mountain (奶酪山), elev. 4,400 m, forms the most distinctive peak in the region.
