Baima Shan (白马山), or White Horse Mountain, is located just west of the Shangri-La to Deqen highway, 15 km south of Deqen City. The region is heavily forested and unusually wild. A number of summits rise above 5,000 meters, the highest being Duochubomubadeng at 5,466 meters.
The area is being managed as a restricted nature preserve with scientists actively researching flora and fauna. Few mountaineers and trekkers have visited the area. A team of trekkers who attempted to access the area from the east were sternly turned away by park rangers in 2022.
